It's better to feel pain, than nothing at all The opposite of love's indifference So pay attention now, I'm standing on your porch screaming out And I won't leave until you come downstairs Classes had yet to start, but since she’d arrived she’d been reading books like crazy. She had spent every day in that library musing over classics to actual course books. It was like her own person wonderland for her mind. In those walls she felt safe, like nothing could harm her. Those books were her friends that spoke softly to her and made her feel at home. Transitioning to Landcaster was easier than at her previous school. There she felt isolated, and her roommate made her feel like a freak, like she wasn’t human. Books had always been there for her though, and because of them she was sane.
Today was different though. She wanted to get out and see where she’d be spending the next few months. And so she decided to go to the bookstore located in the mall. It was probably pointless, but it gave her reason to doll herself up slightly and get some fresh air. A simple floral shirt to match the beautiful weather outside, shorts, and sandals completed her outfit. She teased her hair slightly before heading for the door. The mall was off campus, and she’d either walk or take the bus. Kimmy tried to talk her confidence up and board the bus, but she couldn’t do it. Too many people on there, and it made her uncomfortable.
The walking route wasn’t too terribly long. Perhaps a little longer than she had anticipated, but the sites were nice. The city was nice, and the slight bustle didn’t make her too nervous. She walked around better with sunglasses. She knew people couldn’t look her in the eyes, and that enough gave her the comfort to keep walking. She saw a large building in the distance along with several signs that announced the mall was .5 miles away. Glancing down at her phone, which never had messages, she concluded that she would be spending the majority of the day at the mall, in the bookstore.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Kimmy was inside the mall and trying to navigate her way toward the bookstore. The mall cop was less than friendly and seemed to be more interested in something off in the distance. With a sigh and big doe eyes, she walked about trying to find her way to her destination. The mall was huge, and with each passing minute Kimmy was growing distraught. She could hear her heart pounding in her ears as she tried to find the bookstore. Had there even been a bookstore to begin with? She looked it up online, of course it was here! Then where exactly was it?
Finally, after what seemed like hours, she found it. It was tucked away in a corner, but she found it. A huge sigh of relief left her lips as she entered the store. It was actually bigger than she had anticipated it being. She walked down every isle, inspecting their contents over quickly before heading to the classics. She grabbed a William Faulkner book and began reading. Of course she had read the book over and over, but William Faulkner was a writing genius with timeless books.

fingers flicking from spine to spine. dime had burned his bible from last year during a drunken escapade in the backyard of a buddy's house, along with half of his wardrobe, in the name of "new beginnings" when the school year ended. it was now time to replace his things. despite being an avid people-watcher, the mall really wasn't his scene--and he'd been here all day. he was antsy.
his fingers stopped on a particularly tatty spine--did they sell used books here? he opened it directly to john 2:1-11, jesus changes the water into wine. folded six times with faded creases, right there in the middle of the book, was a fifty-dollar-bill. goody-good christians, he thought, grabbing at the bill. if anyone was going to leave money in a book for someone to find, it would be a karma-is-god believing christian.
upon closer inspection, dime noticed that the book was without a price tag. explains the age. he closed the book in one hand with the fifty in the other and turned to leave but halted at the sight of a cute brunette nervously flipping through a book in the classics section. something about her screamed innocent--the floral? the timid posture? she looked about college age. suddenly, being here seemed a lot more interesting.
dime sauntered up to the girl, stood behind her and quickly admired her round ass before making himself known. he slowly bent as close to her ear as he thought he could get away with and whispered, "boo."
eyeing the faulkner in her hand, he added, "you find any cash in there?"

Maybe it's bricks and mortar now, Whether or not they run it down I don't want anything to shake that shape away No one told us which way to come Kimmy was quite consumed in her book as she flipped through the various pages. She always wondered why it was that she could find comfort in a book store she’d never been in before and just read. She could spend hours without even a second thought. It wasn’t uncommon for her to forget about simple meals and eat maybe once a dance sometimes when she was in a good book. She’d fall asleep with a book in her arms and wake up to pick up right where she’d left off. Her teachers had always adored her for her intellect and ability to read through several books in a short period of time. She often recommended books to them and vice versa.
Kimmy didn’t even register the presence behind her as she slipped another page. She liked her lips quickly, her focus still on the book. However a soft ‘boo’ sent a shiver down her spine and her book in the air. Kimmy gasped loudly turning around quickly with slightly wide eyes. What in the world. It took Kimmy several deep breathes to regain some of her composure. Her heart was pounding painfully in her chest and she almost debated just running away. These were the scenarios she couldn’t handle.
Her focus was more on the finding where actually she had ‘thrown’ her book. Located at her feet she quickly grabbed it and dusted it off. She prayed it wasn’t damaged and with a quick look over she deemed it ok. The boy who decided it was okay to scare her spoke once more and Kimmy looked at him, her heart still pounding. “What…” she glanced down at her book,” no?” she was extremely confused. She looked around her, nervous. No one around in this whole place? “I’m sorry, who are you?” she asked softly. Had she met him before, or was he just scaring her for his own pleasure?
