There was a time in Faith's life where she was fearless, irresponsible and just down right stupid. She didn't consider the consequences of her actions for herself or those around her which is essentially what got her into her current mess in the first place. She didn't consider how the lives of her family would be impacted when she ran away to Kentucky at fifteen with her boyfriend which was quite inconsiderate. Maturity wasn't her strong point until the stick turned blue and then it was like everything was different. She grew up a lot in that instant like this magical realization came over her that she was now responsible for the fate of another human life.
Now, five years later - she's the complete opposite of her past self. She's more cautious than she ever imagined possible. She wasn't the most trusting person back in the day but now it's nearly impossible for her to fully accept that someone could actually want to help her. It's a trait that she feels is well earned considering the amount of people who swore that they'd be there for her only to break her heart in the end. She's more responsible now for obvious reasons. Unlike a regular college student, she can't go party at night. She has school work, a job, a son and a boyfriend who all deserve her attention which makes it hard for her to truly find time to herself.
She doesn't mind her life. She's quite happy with it despite all of the flaws with it and she still has that same old charm. She's not perfect, no where near it but something about her is just charismatic.
History:
Faith Evelyn Gates was born on September first to Elliot Gates and Raine Gregory (now Gates). Her twin sister, Baye Estelle was born exactly seven minutes later. Those little girls were the light of her mother and father's lives for the first six months of their life and soon the love that Raine and Elliot shared multiplied again as they convinced another child. This one turned out to be a little boy despite her mother's instance that it was going to be another little girl.
The first five years of Faith's life were everything that a little girl could imagine. She had two loving parents, a twin sister who she could always play with and a younger brother to torture. Her parents were considered 'higher middle class' at this point so she also got the majority of the things that she wanted. She and her siblings spent a lot of their day at their mother's dance studio eating chocolate chip cookies and drinking apple juice boxes. Things were just so wonderful that she couldn't imagine them ever changing. She was just the average adorable little girl until her uncle's husband started to show just a little more interest in her.
They'd been trying to adopt a child of their own for years so it was fairly easy for him to just pass it off as wishful thinking about having a daughter of his own one day. He started offering to pick her up after preschool which was a tad strange since he never mentioned Baye or Oliver. But, her parents were more than happy to let her go and have little adventures with her uncle. He took her to art museums, shows on Broadway and he always took her this little bakery with the 'best oatmeal raisin cookies in New York'. He seemed so trusting that there was no hesitation when he asked if he could take her for nights at his place.
Nothing happened for a couple of weeks so she felt completely comfortable staying there until he came creeping into the guest room one night and slowly slipped his hand under her nightgown. He just quietly told her that her daddy said that this was okay and how disappointed that he would be if he found out that she had been a bad girl. She viewed her father as her hero in every sense of the word so she just let him do what he wanted and more importantly, she did what he wanted her to do to him. The first time left her feeling dirty which was something that she hadn't felt yet in her five years on Earth and she didn't know why she felt like this. The sexual abuse continued from then until she was eleven.
It had gotten progressively more intense over time and he finally decided that it was time to go all the way with this. He had waited long enough! So, he sneaked into her bedroom just like the other times and she was trying to fake sleep which was pretty normal. He whispered the old thing once again about how her daddy would be so disappointed if she didn't do as he wanted. He took something precious from her that night and she was so incredibly happy when her uncle walked in on his precious husband over his tiny niece. They argued right in front of her for a couple of hours and eventually, it was just her and her uncle. He swore up and down that his marriage was over and asked if she could maybe just keep this between them.
He didn't want her father to find out about this and murder him even though this little request was going to end up crippling her emotional development. She doesn't see the connection between sex and love making. She started throwing herself at any guy who would touch her shortly after her thirteenth birthday and she realized that she could actually make some money with this. She started charging a pretty penny to men far too old for her and she asked them each to bring her a box of cookies. It sort of became her signature after awhile.
She met a boy when she was fifteen who would later change her life in ways that she could never imagine. He was the first (and last) person that she told about her uncle's sexual abuse and the first person that she ever felt like she could truly love. Things did not work out between them but he gave her something special that nobody else could - he gave her Everett. Getting pregnant at fifteen wasn't a planned thing and she didn't even know if she wanted the baby.
Adoption seemed like the only reasonable option and she even found a couple who she felt deserved the baby inside of her uterus more than she did. They'd been trying to conceive on their own for almost their entire ten year marriage and they really made her feel like she was a member of their family during the whole process and not just an incubator for their future child.
Everett Sawyer Gates was born on June twenty-seventh in the wee hours of the morning after a long painful labor. Faith was forty-two weeks pregnant when she finally delivered so she felt like she had plenty of time to think through her choice to give up her child. The situation changed so much when she held her son for the very first time. She felt like she was all alone if she chose to parent until she made a comment to the potential mother that caught Raine off guard - "Tell him that he's not alone when he makes his mistakes, sometimes that's all it takes". She and her daughter had a heart to heart about the choice and it was decided that they would keep the baby.
That sweet couple understood completely why she couldn't give up her baby and within six months, they were the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl. Faith's life as a mother wasn't as easy as she expected. She ended up alone with a relatively small infant and she felt like her whole world was crashing down on her until someone by the name of Alvin Prince began helping her. He started out as emotional support - a soft place to land when she needed to rant about something or just cry over the struggles and stress of new motherhood.
They were friends before she gave birth as well but post having her baby was definitely when things got just a little bit more romantic. She was so timid with love that she didn't attempt her feelings right away not even as her precious son started clinging to Alvin like he was his father. His first word was 'dada' which was adorable even if Faith corrected him for it. Her corrections didn't work and Everett still calls him 'daddy' at five years old.
(Lizz is that part okay? <3)
